Welcome to Ecuador! Upon arrival to Quito’s International Airport you will be transferred to your city hotel, where you will have the evening at leisure to explore the surrounding neighborhood or relax in preparation for the coming days.

Overnight at Patio Andaluz Hotel (no meals included)

After breakfast at the hotel, head out with your guide on a tour of lovely Quito, a beautiful city surrounded by volcanoes, most prominently by Pichincha volcano (15,750 ft). Quito was founded by the Inca civilization and developed by Spanish colonizers. Its historic center is a true architectural jewel, dating back to the XVIth and XIXth century and registered by UNESCO for its unique touristic sites, churches, and colonial convents. Admire Plaza de la Independencia, Quito's main square, and the Metropolitan Cathedral with its striking sugar white tower. Colourful people from all over the country display Ecuador's rich cultural melting pot of cultures. Visit La Compañia de Jesús, the first and best example of Latin American baroque architecture, boasting a ornate and completely gold-leafed interior. After this, travel to “The Middle of the World”, to the north of Quito, where the fictitious Equator line runs along the monument. Enjoy a delicious lunch at “El Crater” restaurant before visiting the Equator monument and its neo-colonial village.

This evening is yours at leisure.

Overnight at Patio Andaluz Hotel (B, L)

After a delightful breakfast at the hotel, you will be taken to Otavalo, where you and your private guide will walk through the bustling marketplace to browse the different stands and meet local people. Otavalo is one of the most visited indigenous markets in South America, rich in traditions and customs. As you make your way through the maze of stalls selling alpaca sweaters, ponchos, hammocks, pan flutes and other souvenirs, you can admire the multicolored handicrafts and have a go at haggling with the merchant. Enjoy lunch at Hacienda Pinsaqui. Return to Quito for your final night on your own in the city!

After a final breakfast in Quito, you will be transferred to the airport for your departure flight to Coca, where you will be greeted upon landing. Your driver will take you in the direction of your lodge. Stop to enjoy a quick lunch at the private house. Head to the town docks where you will board Sacha´s private motorized canoes for the 2 hour journey down river to Sacha´s Lodges property. A 30 minute hike through the rainforest leads you to Lake Pilchicocha. Here, you are met by native workers to paddle you across the lake to your final destination. Arrive at Sacha Lodge around 3:00 or 4:00 pm.

There are plenty of activities to choose from after arrival to the lodge. Perhaps go for a refreshing swim in Lake Pilchicocha, or head to the mini tower to bird watch or watch the sun set. Visit the butterfly house with your naturalist guide to view the beautiful colors of many different species of butterflies. Or simply relax and enjoy the property, planning your coming days at your leisure!

Overnight at Sacha Lodge (B, L, D)

Day on own.

Days at Sacha Lodge are filled with discovery. During excursions, visitors are divided into small groups (max 6), each with its own native guide and bilingual naturalist. Native guides carry a lifetime of knowledge about the medicinal and functional uses of rainforest plants. They proudly display the wonders of their home environment, sometimes even offering a tasty treat like the strange lemon tasting ants that coexist in the stems of certain trees. Naturalists, educated in biology and ecology, translate for native guides and complement excursions with explanations of the scientific workings of the rainforest. Sacha Lodge has something for everyone.

Favorite activities include paddling dugout canoes along blackwater creeks and lakes past luxuriant lianas, bromeliads, and enormous palms. Swimming and piranha fishing are also popular pastimes. For the adventurous Ecuador traveler there are night walks and canoe trips in search of caiman and other nocturnal creatures. The lodge offers a number of very unique sites to its visitors.

A 130-foot observation tower and a 940-foot canopy walkway both give visitors a chance to get above the rainforest canopy for incredible views of the area. These areas are also great places to observe toucans and other tropical birds and, with luck, spot noisy howler monkeys or a three-toed sloth. Another site is the butterfly house where over 40 local butterfly species are bred. Visitors can see the process of breeding and raising these colorful insects and wander through the "flying room." Finally, there's the Yasuni Parrot Lick. Just a short distance from Sacha Lodge is Ecuador's most famous parrot lick, where visitors can observe dozens of the magnificently colored birds feeding on the clay.
