Along with learning more about South America, we were able to do some sight seeing ourselves and traveled to Antigua Guatemala to learn a little bit about Guatemalan history. This city built in the 16th century, and once capital of Guatemala, was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of it's well preserved history of the colonial era. It's Baroque style of the 18th century is still present in the ruins today. The city is surrounded by 3 enormous volcanoes, Volcán de Agua (water), Volcán de Fuego (fire), and Acatenango, the Volcán de Agua being the most clearly visible from city center. These provided the most spectacular horizons from the anywhere you look. It was astonishing to see a volcano so close to the city center. Volcano trekking is a popular our in the city. The famous Santa Catalina arch was also a greatsight to see.
We also visited the Hotel/Museum Casa Santo Domingo and were incredible fascinated by the structure and history of this once grand convent. An absolutely must-see site, this Hotel hosts 6 Museum sections, each filled with so much ancient culture.
Contact us if you have any interest in visiting this historical Country. We'd love to help you prepare a customized package and can include trips for Tikal, the ancient Mayan Ruins!
